i dont think harry potter is overrated at all. it deserves all the glamor it has, its certainly earned. its the most successful film series in history & for good reason. im just getting kinda tired of all the media attention which could go to some other things, or all the online references & memes that are hp-related

The only problem I have with Gandalf is he does fuck-all magic. When he comes back to life, he doesn't even know how it happened, he feels he was sent back by some higher force. The most impressive thing he ever does is make his staff light up all glowy. Not only that, but he never thought of using his eagle friends to fly straight to Mordor with the ring and dropping it into Mt Doom while the Gondorian/Rohan army attacked Mordor at the front gates as a diversion. His role might as well have been given to a torch. Dumbledore, on the other hand, found 7 of the 12 uses for dragon's blood, worked with Flamel to make the Philosopher's Stone, defeated Grindelwald, outsmarted Voldemort with the help of Snape, manipulated every single damn character into fulfilling his plan to have Harry choose to die to defeat Voldy... AND he was a more complicated, flawed and interesting character. QED.

I actually take that back cos Gandalf, when he wasn't flying on the eagle to easily save the whole world, was in Rohan, and freed Theoden from Saruman and when Theoden decided to go to Helms Deep, he was riding some 600 leagues to to rally Eomer's dudes (riders of Rohan, some 2000 people) to fight the Uruk Hai that was going to kill all the Old men and women and children at Helms Deep. Which means he basically save one whole nation in Middle Earth. And then he went on the Minas Tirith to make sure that Pippin was safe, and which lead to him saving Minas Tirith from Sauron's army of Orcs by convincing Aragorn that he SHOULD take his place as king of Gondor and to do that he should serve Gondor first. Which means that he saved 2 nations, which in turn means that he saved a whole RACE that was basically failing and was to be abandoned by the elves.

I think Gandalf's role was beyond that. In Fangorn forest, when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli come across the "White Wizard" and later realizes that it was in fact Gandalf, Aragorn says "We thought you were Saruman". And Gandalf in return says, "I am Saruman. Or at least Saruman as he should have been.(or something like that)" he actually is talking about how Saruman was suppose to look after the race of men and Ents and help them co-exist.

So yeah...

I do realise that you can also say that if Gandalf had flown all the way to Mordor on the eagles with the Hobbits and just dropped the ring from sky none of this would've had to happened. Buuuuuttttttt what the heck? It IS after all a fantasy series!
