X-Men To Tackle Gay Teen Suicide In Upcoming Comic

News & Current Events - Page 6 Xmen

Quote :
Synonymous in the comic book and movie world with the gay community, the X-Men franchise is set to once again lend its characters and artists to a near and dear issue: LGBT teen suicide. Details follow.

It's being reported that X-Men writer Kieron Gillen and artist Jamie McKelvie are working on a teen suicide storyline for the franchise's Generation Hope series.

Speaking with iFanboy, Gillen dished on the upcoming issue:

Quote :
“It’s not the type of story that fits in any other major superhero book. It’s simply not what those books are about. But the X-Men? X-Men is a book about mutants, used as a metaphor about prejudice. And of the X-Men books, Generation Hope is fundamentally about new mutants trying to survive dealing with the fact they’re mutants. With the metaphor in place, you can not just do a story about it – I dare say you should tell a story about it. In a real way, it’s the sort of story Generation Hope exists to tell. If we can’t tell this story and tell it as well as we can, the book may as well not exist."

Marvel's special issue of X-Men: Generation Hope will hit stores on July 20th. For an intense preview of the art from the issue, visit BleedingCool.

It's done. At about 10:45 PM, Eastern Time, the New York state senate approved a gay marriage bill 33-29. It's over folks, WE WON!

This is how Fascism takes the political stage in America: Draped in red, white and blue swag:

http://caucuses.desmoinesregister.com/2011/07/07/update-bachmann-is-first-to-sign-family-leaders-pro-marriage-pledge/

Quote :

Bachmann is first to sign Family Leader’s pro-marriage pledge WILLIAM PETROSKI 6:38 PM, Jul 7, 2011 Categories: Caucus Insider
Politics reporter
William Petroski

The Family Leader, a prominent Iowa group that promotes Christian conservative social values, said Thursday it is asking all presidential candidates to sign a pledge regarding their personal convictions on traditional marriage.

The pledge is entitled, “The Marriage Vow – A Declaration of Dependence upon Marriage and Family.”

The organization’s chief executive officer is Bob Vander Plaats, a conservative evangelical leader who was the state chair of Mike Huckabee’s Republican presidential campaign when he won the 2008 Iowa Caucuses. Vander Plaats said the Family Leader will not support any candidate who declines to sign the pledge.

“If you are looking at being a leader of our great country….we would like to have you pledge personal fidelity to your own spouse and a respect for the marital bonds of others,” Vander Plaats told reporters at a news conference on the steps of the Iowa Statehouse.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minnesota, quickly signed the pledge Thursday...

<snip>

Presidential candidates who sign the pledge must agree to personal fidelity to his or her spouse, the appointment of “faithful constitutionalists” as judges, opposition to any redefinition of marriage, and prompt reform of uneconomic and anti-marriage aspects of welfare policy, tax policy and divorce law.

The Marriage Vow also outlines support for the legal advocacy for the federal Defense of Marriage Act, humane efforts to protect women and children, rejection of Sharia Islam, safeguards for all married and unmarried U.S. military service members, and commitment to downsizing government and the burden upon American families.

In addition, candidates are asked to recognize that “robust childrearing and reproduction is beneficial to U.S. demographic, economic, strategic and actuarial health and security.”

Alice Stewart, a Bachmann aide, said the congresswoman had no qualms about signing the Family Leader’s pledge. “She has been married for over 30 years and has a strong marriage and faith.”

<snip>
------------------------

In addition, Think Progress reports that this calls for the banning of “all forms” of pornography and states that homosexuality is both a choice and a health risk.

SAY GOOD-BYE TO NIFTY, gaypornium, XTUBE and all the rest of it. Say hello to MANDATORY PINK TRIANGLES IN YOUR FUTURE.

Ya know, I like a good fear-mongering as much as the next craven wretch, but we really do need to take a realistic view on this.

First. Michelle Bachmann has a not-inconsiderable chance of being defeated for the Republican Presidential nomination. It is very difficult to propose such things when you LOSE an election, and while she'd likely return to her reconfigured house seat in Minnesota, that's not an especially appealing place from which to launch a Constitutional fight. Particularly, once again, if she did it after getting her ass kicked.

Second. Even if she wins the nomination, she's going to be up against an incumbent President running on the cheesy concept of protecting entitlements, while Ms. Bachmann will likely be proposing the destruction of some of the programs most cherished to her base of ancient white folks; Medicare and Social Security. This makes it somewhat problematic to win an election, if everyone hates your fucken ass.

Third, and this is making a few assumptions now. Let's say she does win, let's even say that somehow, her win is dramatic enough that she wipes out a whole bunch of Democrats in the House and Senate. Changing the Constitution is something of a chore, in that it requires supermajority support from Congress AND the States. I sense reflexive opposition to this from some blue states, even were it to be proposed. I also sense that she won't have the supermajorities required, since that would require 20 of the 23 Democratic Senators up for election this year to lose. Based on WHERE those Senators are from, it ain't happening unless they're caught with live children of the same sex or dead children of the opposite sex IN THEIR BEDS. So there's an instant veto to the Constitutional Amendment. Easy peasy.

But just to thoroughly destroy the paranoid delusions that seem to be running rampant today, there's also this little body called the Supreme Court. It generally, but not always, follows this legal idea called Precedent. In this case, that generally means following established case law, which quite firmly declares pornography to be a form of free speech. Now, while a new Constitutional Amendment would override the First Amendment should it ever happen, I think I've made it abundantly clear that it is NOT happening.

Any questions?

You're ageist and condescending attitude is duly noted. I assure you it isn't just the "crazies" you refer to who are concerned about the threats being made to Social Security and Medicare. Moreover the "take America back" cry is heard here as much on the left as it is the right. It is why MANY (foolishly) voted for Obama, believing he *could* make a difference.

The fact is, when it comes to the big domestic and foreign policy issues, our government IS under the control of an unelected, fascist, national security (military/intelligence) apparatus operating beyond Constitutional constraints (i.e., THE LAW). You may not want to believe that but it is a rational conclusion drawn from observable facts. Despite the war crimes of the Bush administration, despite the lies that allowed us to be taken to war not only in Iraq (which was not an imminent threat to our national security and where there were no weapons of mass destruction -- and they knew it) but Afghanistan (that we were attacked by al Quida on 9/11 is a total fiction and even had we been, that we invaded Afghanistan for anything other than economic and military [resource war] supremacy is equally a total fabrication) where we remain to this day, a change in political leadership HAS DONE NOTHING to alter the course set by the previous, extremest neoconservative right wing agenda.

I'm sure there were many German's who poo-pooed those who warned against the Nazis, too, Trevor. Don't ever tell me it can't happen here. It already IS happening. We have people held prisoner AND TORTURED without charges being filed, without trial and at this point with no hope of ever receiving justice or release. True, it is only "a few" so called "enemy combatants" but the precedent has been set and NO ONE including your beloved Supreme Court is doing anything about it.

What a shock that we stand here again, with unproven theories being proclaimed as fact. I would ask for the steps of scientific inquiry to be followed and for an actual case to be made regarding the given claims, but we've long since gone past the point where it's worth the electrons such a plea would be printed on.

It must be fun though, to continually express such disapproval of the institutions your nation created to govern you, and yet never doing anything to even attempt reform of the situation. For all of the complaining that's done, and for all of the hand-washing and utter predictions of doom that are made, there's precious little that's done to actually ATTEMPT to rebuke it. I find that to be the most disappointing feature of the whole series of complaints, that there's not a shred of energy devoted to altering it, or even towards organizing against it.

But what do I know, I'm just another one of the 'political caste' that you so regularly like to castigate. It's certainly not as though I actually follow through and make change happen, no that'd be too damn easy an answer now wouldn't it. I'm clearly just another conspirator, just like everyone else who tries and succeeds at making changes through the system or even out of the system.

When you're done living on the soapbox, perhaps you'll see some reason and either accept reality, or start doing things to CHANGE reality. Or, you know, you could just continue castigating anyone who doesn't agree with the entirety of your worldview, perhaps hoping that such disdain will be productive.

Trevor, you speak of facts but offer nothing but opinion. Your wish to engage politically within the system is commendable. However, your unwillingness to look at the big picture and understand that there are levels within it, is not. Certainly things can be accomplished within the political system so long as they do not challenge the larger economic system within which it operates. But
woe to any who advocate a significant re-evaluation of that system itself. Even those of us who point out the obvious lies and contradictions get bitch slapped by alleged liberals like yourself.

Meanwhile the empire crumbles from corruption within and everyone wonders why we have to give up badly needed social services to pay for wars of choice half-way around the planet. And wonders why it was necessary to put the infrastructure for a fascist police state IN PLACE (and it is in place).

How do you explain all this, Trevor? You accuse me of not living in reality and yet what explanation do you have for the economic, geopolitical and social reality unfolding around us? You speak of political action and achievement but what can be achieved if one does not have an accurate understanding of what is actually going on?

I find it odd that someone who shows open disdain for anyone who refuses to agree wholeheartedly with your views has that much to say about free speech rights. What strange times we live in, strange times indeed. May cognitive dissonance not become the order of the day.

In actual news, we're now 40 years, almost to the day, when the first gay rights march happened in Canada. Apparently it was rainy that day.

The first amendment guarantees you freedom of speech, but it says nothing about a right to espouse your views on a platform owned and regulated by a private individual, which is what this forum is.

Your unwillingness to leave a topic of conversation that is clearly controversial after being advised that the conversation is over is almost as rude as the way you paralleled Trev's scepticism to Nazism. If you want a serious discussion about this matter you can start a separate thread and people can choose whether or not they wish to participate, or you could take it to a political forum. Getting angry at Trev and Kell because they question the validity of the evidence you present to support your extreme claims isn't going to help anyone.

the anti-gay group I just spent five months debating against in Burnaby has formed a political party, it's sole goal is to eradicate anything pro-gay in the schools.
